Xantus's Hummingbird ACEO in acrylics

Really pleased with how this one turned out.  It took quite a few glazes to get the feather colours right but I got there in the end.

Xantus's Hummingbirds are found in Baja California, Mexico.  They measure around 8 - 9 cm in length and weigh between 3 - 4 grams.


Xantus's Hummingbird measures 2.5 x 3.5 inches and is painted on 300gsm smooth Arches Watercolour paper.

Hummingbird in acrylics

I really enjoyed painting this one.  One thing I do really like about the gessobord panel compared to the canvas panel is the smooth surface as it allows me to get  a more mottled background affect.   Also helps using the different brand of professional white acrylic paint to my normal brand which can be reopen with water so it does pay to experiment with different brands to find the right combination that works.

Hummingbird 2 measures 6 x 6 inches and is painted on Ampersand Gessobord panel.

Ruby Throated Hummingbird in acrylics

I really enjoyed painting this one - everything just seems to work. 

 

The Ruby Throated Hummingbird is the smallest bird that breeds in Eastern United States and Eastern Canada.  It measures only 7 - 9 cm in length and weighs between 2 - 6 grams.  This one is a female as it doesn't have the ruby red throat patch. 

 

Ruby Throated Hummingbird measures 8 x 10 inches and is painted on Fredrix Archival Watercolour Canvas Board.

Tufted Coquette ACEO in acrylics

This one was fun to paint and everything just seemed to work.

The Tufted Coquette is a tiny hummingbird measuring only 6.6 cm and weigh around 2.3 grams.  They are found in Venezuela, Trinidad, Guiana and Northern Brazil.

Hummingbird in acrylics

After painting the ACEO hummingbird, I decided to paint a larger one - really enjoy painting hummingbirds that are in flight.  I have found a few more reference photos that I can use so I am planning on painting some more in the future.

Hummingbird measures 8 x 6 inches and is painted on Raymar feather lite canvas panel.

Hummingbird ACEO in acrylics

I have wanted to paint this one for ages.  I am really pleased with how it turned out - I was a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to paint the bird as it is really small but I used a number 2 rigger script brush and it worked perfectly.

Hummingbird measures 3.5 x 2 .5 inches and is painted on 300gsm smooth Arches Watercolour paper.
