Giant Swallowtail Butterfly in coloured pencils

My local art store had a 50% off everything sale on the other day and I have been thinking about trying out coloured pencils. So since they were half price I decided to give them a go.  Purchased a tin of Faber Castell polychromos coloured pencils. I tried drawing a bird first but didn't like the result - much prefer painting them in acrylics.  So then I did butterfly and was rather pleased with how it turned out.  Next I am going to try them out on a Kangaroo as I think they will work rather well as I will be able to layer in different colours.

Gaudy Commodore Butterfly in acrylics

And for something different, I painted this lovely butterfly.  I used a few glazes to get the depth to the wings.

Bee in acrylics

I have had this one printed out for ages to paint.  Just wasn't sure on the size - original had it printed out as a 6 x 6 but that cut off the edge of the flower. So  I eventually settled on 7 x 5 size which suited it perfectly.  It was a fun one to paint.

Poppy ACEO in acrylics

I felt like painting something different so decide to paint this pretty poppy.  Rather pleased with the final result - kept darkening and lighting the petals until I achieved the effect I wanted.

Poppy measures 3.5 x 2.5 inches and is painted on 300gsm smooth Arches watercolour paper.

American Lady in Acrylics

I finally got around to painting this one.  Rather pleased how it turned out.  Took a while to paint due to the pattern on the wings - much easier and less complicated painting birds.

Swans in Oils

I love the vibrant colours of the water reflections in this one.  Was fun painting the swans too.  Got me thinking that I must go and take some photos of the black swans that live on the lake just down the road from me.  Just need the weather to settle down a bit - would be nice to have a few days of just sunshine but so far this month it has been partly cloudy with showers.
