Ruby Crowned Kinglet No 4 in acrylics

When I went to order  more Colourfix Suede paper I discovered that it had been discontinued and replaced with Colourfix Smooth paper.  I emailed the manufacture to found out if the surface of the new paper is still the same as the old suede paper.  And it is -  thank goodness.  Basically the same primer is now being screen printed onto 300gsm watercolour paper instead of a 500gsm paper.

I order some of the new Smooth paper and other than it being a bit thinner (which makes cutting it a lot easier), the surface is the same as the Suede. The paint still blends beautifully and I can  build up the layers.

I still have a few sheets left of the Suede Paper so for a next few weeks I will be painting on either the Suede or the Smooth paper.

This little guy is the first painting on the new paper and I am really pleased with how he turned out.

This one was rather fun to paint. I used quite a few glazed to get the depth to the feathers.

Ruby Crowned Kinglet in acrylics

I really enjoyed painting this one in the larger format -  it is just easier to see the details and the subtle change in colours.  Really pleased with the final painting.

I love how this little guy  is perched on the branch. 

The Ruby Crowned Kinglet is found in  North America.  They are a tiny bird measuring only 9 - 11 cm in length and weight between 5 - 10 grams.  An interesting fact about this bird is that they can lay up to 12 eggs!! An entire clutch of eggs can weigh as much as the female. 

Ruby Crowned Kinglet measures 6 x 6 inches and is painted on Raymar feather lite canvas panel.

Ruby Crowned Kinglet ACEO in acrylics

I love this little bird's red crown. Really happy with the final painting. I did battle a bit with the colour of its feathers until I remembered that I had a tube of raw umber (I hardly ever use it) and that was the colour that I needed for its head and back feathers. 

These little birds are found throughout North American.  They measure around 9 - 11 cm and weigh between 5 - 10 grams

Ruby Crowned Kinglet measures 3.5 x 2.5 inches and is painted on  300gsm smooth Arches watercolour paper.
