I couldn't resist painting this cute fellow - just love the way he is positioned on the branch.  This one is in his winter plumage - in spring he will molt and be a vibrant yellow.

American Goldfinch in acrylics

I am really please how this painting turned out.  Everything just seem to come together with this one. I used a combination of Cadmium Yellow, Transparent Yellow, Titanium White  and Yellow Ochre for the feathers plus a combination of purple (Ultramarine Blue + Permanent Alizarine)  and burnt umber to darken them.

An interesting fact about the American Goldfinch is that is the State bird of New Jersey, Iowa and Washington.

American Goldfinch measures 6 x 6 inches and is painted on Raymar's Feather Lite Canvas panel.

Many thanks to Nigel for the reference photo.

Lion Cub in acrylics

So this is the very cute lion cub that I was working on last week. I really enjoyed painting him.  I have a tiger cub lined up next to paint.  Just didn't get around to it this week.  Just been one of those weeks were other things have come up  so didn't mange to paint all the paintings that I had planned to do.

Goldfinch ACEO in acrylics

I really do love painting birds. I am really glad that I found a photo sharing site were generous photographers allow artists to use their photos as references. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to paint all these beautiful birds from around the world.  Plus it is interesting reading up a bit about the bird I have painted.  This bird mainly eats seeds and will only occasionally eat insects.
