Many thanks to Patrick Kavanagh for the reference photo.

Red Capped Robin No 5 in acrylics

I love how this one is perched on the branch.  I had to do quite a few layers/glazes to get the depth to the black feathers.  Really pleased with how it turned out.

Red Capped Robin No 5 measures 6 x 6 inches and is painted on Colourfix Smooth Paper.

Many thanks to Patrick Kavanagh for the reference photo.

Red Capped Robin in acrylics

So for my next Australian bird, I painted  Red Capped Robin. Robins are another one of my favourite birds - they are just so colourful.  Rather like the background that I created - went for a two tone effect - I think it works rather well.

Red Capped Robin  measures 4 x 6  inches and is painted on 300gsm smooth Arches watercolour paper.

Many thanks to Patrick Kavanagh for the reference photo.

Red Capped Robin ACEO in acrylics

I decided to paint another red capped robin. I love the position this bird is sitting on the branch.    An interesting fact about these birds is that red plumage is from two red keto-carotenoid pigments and since they are unable to synthesize the compounds themselves, they have to obtain it from their food.

Red Capped Robin measures 2.5 x 3.5 inches and 300gsm smooth Arches watercolour paper.

Red Capped Robin in acrylics

I decided to paint another red capped robin but in a larger format.  I always find painting the red feathers a challenge - can't just add white to lighten them so end up mixing white and yellow to create the lighter highlights.

Red Capped Robin measures 4 x 6 inches and is painted on 300gsm Arches smooth watercolour paper.

Red Capped Robin ACEO in acrylics

I love painting these little robins.  They only measure 10.5 x 12.5 cm in length.  I will have to paint another one but in a larger format - will have to look for another reference photo that I can use.

Red Capped Robin 2 measures 2.5 x 3.5 inches and is painted on 300gsm smooth Arches watercolour paper.

Many thanks to Ron Knight for the reference photo.

Red Capped Robin in acrylics

This is another one of our Australian Robin's.  The red-capped robin is the smallest red robin and it can be found in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.  He was rather fun to paint.  I ended up just using my no 3 round brush to paint the bird - works rather well as I can get a good point for the finer detail.

Red-Capped Robin measures 3.5 x 2.5 inches and is painted on 300gsm smooth watercolour paper.

Many thanks to Ron Knight for the reference photo.
