Winter Blue Jay in acrylics

This is another one that I have had printed out for ages to paint. Really pleased with how it turned out - used quite a few glazes for the blue feathers.

Blue Jay ACEO in acrylics

I enjoyed painting this one - everything just worked.

Blue Jays are found through out eastern and central United States and Southern Canada. They  measure between 22 - 30 cm in length and weigh between 70 - 100 grams.  An interesting fact about the Blue Jay is that the pigment in it's feathers is melanin which is actually brown.  So the blue colour arises from modified cells on the surface of the feather barbs which scatters the light creating  the blue colour.

Blue Jay measures 3.5 x 2.5 inches and is painted on 300gsm smooth Arches watercolour paper.

Blue Jay in Acrylics

I really enjoyed painting this one.   I thought about painting it as an Aceo but decided rather to paint it as a  6 x 4 inch.  It took ages to paint the feathers.  I concentrate on one section at a time otherwise it got a bit confusing.  There are some interesting facts about this bird but I find the most interesting is that they help spread the oak tree after the last glacial period due to their  fondness for acorns.

Blue Jay ACEO in Acrylics

Here is my next bird ACEO.  I  must say that I love painting these little bird ACEO's.  There are going to be a lot more too come.  I have just ordered some smaller brushes from the UK so can't wait for them to arrive.  I think the reason I love painting this small is because I have always preferred painting or drawing on a small scale so the ACEO size is perfect.
