Splendid Fairy Wren No 3 in acrylics

I love how this one is perched on the branch—like he’s about to burst into song.

I actually painted this one last year but forgot to blog or list it—whoops!

Most of my time lately has been going into building my Surface Pattern design business and uploading new patterns to my Spoonflower shop. It has been full-on, but I have started to miss painting my birds. So going forward, I am planning to schedule in at least one painting session a month.

Splendid Fairy Wren in acrylics

 This one was rather an interesting one to paint re blue bird on blue background.  I enjoyed the challenge though.   Quite a few layers went into building the depth to the feathers.

Splendid Fairy Wren ACEO in acrylics

These wrens can be found across Australia expect for Tasmania.  I love the males vibrant blue breeding plumage. The non-breeding plumage is very similar to the female which is pale brown but he does retain a blue wash to his tail and wings.

Splendid Fairy Wren measures 2.5 x 3.5 inches and is painted on 300gsm smooth Arches watercolour paper.
