Long Tailed Tit ACEO in acrylics

I have had this one printed out for ages to paint and finally decided to paint it.  I actually have a pile of reference photos printed out - my problem is I keep finding more that I want to paint so I keep adding to the pile and some get forgotten until I go through pile and discover them again.

The Long Tailed Tit is also known as the Long-tailed Bushtit and is found throughout Europe and Asia. They measure between 13 - 15 cm in length which  includes its  7 - 9 cm tail.

Lioness in acrylics

I really enjoyed painting this one.  I started off with a burnt sienna undercoat, blocked in the lioness, painted in the black background and then the finished the by painting in the finer details of the lioness.  Also used a bit of medium to thin the paint for the finer details mainly because the water was diluting the paint a bit too much.  I am really pleased with the final painting.

Lioness measures 8 x 8 inches and is painted on Raymar Canvas Panel.

Many thanks to Gary Jones for the reference photo.

Blue Jay ACEO in acrylics

I enjoyed painting this one - everything just worked.

Blue Jays are found through out eastern and central United States and Southern Canada. They  measure between 22 - 30 cm in length and weigh between 70 - 100 grams.  An interesting fact about the Blue Jay is that the pigment in it's feathers is melanin which is actually brown.  So the blue colour arises from modified cells on the surface of the feather barbs which scatters the light creating  the blue colour.

Blue Jay measures 3.5 x 2.5 inches and is painted on 300gsm smooth Arches watercolour paper.

Many thanks to Lissa Perkins for the reference photo.

Chestnut - backed Chickadee measures 3.5 x 2.5 inches and is painted on 300gsm smooth Arches watercolour paper.

Bald Eagle in acrylics

I painted this one a bit differently to normal.  Usually I do the background first and then paint the bird.  But since this bird is predominately white, it would have been difficult to cover the green background.  So instead I toned the canvas with burnt sienna, blocked in the bird, painted in the background and then finished off with the finer details of the bird.  I love the fierceness of this bird and I am really please with the final painting

The bald eagle is found in North America and is the national bird and national animal of the United States.   They measure between 70 - 102 cm in length and weigh between 3 - 6.3 kg.

Bald Eagle measures 6 x 6 inches and is painted on Raymar Feather Lite Canvas panel.
